Food poisoning vs. foodborne illness

Majority of people have used the term food poisoning to describe illness acquired by ingesting contaminated food or food that has gone bad. By this definition, we see that food poisoning is merely the colloquial word for foodborne illness (or FBI). When food that is contaminated with bacteria and/or chemicals is eaten, it causes a series of gastrointestinal and systemic symptoms to manifest in the victim. Different illnesses are acquired by ingesting contaminated food, but they all fall under the category of FBI because of the similarly in their symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Loss of appetite

A combination of these symptoms – sometimes all – all increase the victim’s risk for dehydration. Dehydration is easily managed at home, but when symptoms become too severe, dehydration can be life threatening, especially for very young and very old victims.
